Advice you can read, written before you need it

Most of what we do is quieter than a courtroom. Contracts read properly, terms written plainly, and a question answered while it is still a question rather than a claim.

A first meeting is an hour and it is not free advice by accident

We charge for the first hour and we tell you the figure before you sit down, because an hour that costs nothing is an hour nobody prepares for. Bring the papers, bring the dates, and leave with a written note of what we think and what it will cost to do it.

If the answer is that you do not need a lawyer, that is what the note will say. Roughly a third of the people who come to see us are sent away with two paragraphs and an invoice for one hour, and most of them come back with the work that does need doing.

How we work

Four things we put in writing

The cost, before the work

Every matter starts with a fee note saying what it covers and what would make it cost more.

An answer inside two working days

Even if the answer is that we need a week to read something properly.

Everything in plain sentences

A letter you have to ring us about to understand is a letter we wrote badly.

The advocate you met

The person across the table at the first meeting is the person who does the work.

In their words

What clients say afterwards

They told us on the second day that we would lose, and why, and what it would cost either way. Nobody enjoys hearing that. It saved us about four hundred thousand rufiyaa.

I Ismail Waheed Managing director, Kandu Freight

The contracts and the warning procedure they wrote for us are in plain sentences, so our managers actually use them. We have not been to the tribunal since 2024.

A Aminath Shifa Human resources manager, Vilu Retail

I sent a lease to be checked on a Sunday and had it back on Tuesday with a note at the top saying which three clauses mattered. That note is the reason I did not sign it.

Before you ring

The questions we are asked first

How soon can I see somebody?

Usually within three working days, and the same week for anything with a deadline on it.

If you have been served with something, ring the clerk and say so. A claim with a filing date is seen before a question about a contract.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

The papers, in the order they happened, and the dates. A letter, a contract, a transfer receipt and a timeline written on one page will get you further in an hour than anything else.

Copies are fine. Please do not bring originals you cannot replace.

Do you act for both sides?

Never in the same matter. If we already act for the other party we will tell you on the telephone, before you have told us anything about your case, and we will suggest two other chambers.

Will the advocate I meet be the one doing the work?

Yes. That is most of the reason we have stayed at three advocates. The only exception is a hearing date that clashes, and we would tell you about it a fortnight ahead rather than on the day.

Tell us what has happened

One page of the story is enough to start. We will say whether you need an advocate and what it is likely to cost.

Get in touch

Write to the chambers

Say what happened and when. Please do not send papers you cannot spare until we have replied.

We reply to every message. Leave a phone number if you would rather we called.
